چکیده
Abstract The reproduction of many brachyuran crustaceans involves the formation mating pairs often around time female moult with attraction a sexual partner and behaviour controlled by sex pheromones. In shore crabs, Carcinus maenas , females produce pheromones that are released in urine. High Performance Liquid Chromatography analysis (HPLC) urine shows pheromone, identified as nucleotide uridine diphosphate (UDP), elutes an unresolved peak structurally related nucleotides. We examined samples over cycle detected UDP well triphosphate (UTP). Bioassays were conducted to establish possibility blend nucleotides forming pheromone bouquet C. . Whilst induced male mate guarding (cradling), mixture two at ratio 4:1 UDP:UTP elicited even stronger response than either or UTP individually. concentration composition these changes period pre post ecdysis, providing evidence is not always constant. change physiological state sender, here cycle. Our study unravels functionality reaction-specific molecules bouquet. signal, acts attractant combined they maximise reproductive response. use bouquets provides species-specificity, potentially enabling isolation sympatric species, contains valuable information on sender.

The Effects of a Competitor on the Foraging Behaviour of the Shore Crab Carcinus maenas
Optimal Diet Theory suggests that individuals make foraging decisions that maximise net energy intake. Many studies provide qualitative support for this, but factors such as digestive constraints, learning, predation-risk and competition can influence foraging behaviour and lead to departures from quantitative predictions. We examined the effects of intraspecific competition within a classic mo...
متن کاملAsymmetry and fighting performance in the shore crab Carcinus maenas.
Fluctuating asymmetries (left-right differences in symmetric traits) can be negatively related to fitness parameters in a number of biological systems. Hence, it has been suggested that symmetric individuals should outcompete asymmetric individuals during intraspecific agonistic encounters. However, there is a lack of experimental evidence for such a relationship. We investigated the relationsh...
متن کاملParasites of the shore crab Carcinus maenas (L.): implications for reproductive potential and invasion success.
The European shore crab, Carcinus maenas, is one of the most successful marine invasive species. Its success has been in part attributed to the loss of parasites, rekindling an interest in host-parasite interactions and impacts on host fitness in this crab. In the present study, we investigated C. maenas populations from Europe, South Africa and Australia for parasites, and assessed their impac...
متن کاملAgonistic behaviour and biogenic amines in shore crabs Carcinus maenas.
To investigate the role of certain neurohormones in agonistic behaviour, fights were staged between pairs of size-matched male shore crabs Carcinus maenas, and blood samples were taken immediately after the contests had been resolved. Samples were also taken from these crabs at rest (before and after fighting) and after walking on a treadmill. A control group of crabs also had samples taken on ...
متن کاملNeuronal processing of translational optic flow in the visual system of the shore crab Carcinus maenas.
This paper describes a search for neurones sensitive to optic flow in the visual system of the shore crab Carcinus maenas using a procedure developed from that of Krapp and Hengstenberg. This involved determining local motion sensitivity and its directional selectivity at many points within the neurone's receptive field and plotting the results on a map. Our results showed that local preferred ...
